Scoop Wholefoods is passionate about food and we aim to buy as much as we can from local suppliers as well as sourcing organic and fair trade products. Based in Lerwick, Shetland, we stock an extensive range of produce including Shetland beef and lamb; seasonal vegetables; ethnic foods; dried fruit and nuts; wholefoods; as well as everyday and more unusual herbs and spices. If you’re following a special diet and are finding it difficult to source products – especially if you live in remote regions – you’ve come to the right place. We also have a wide range of dairy free, gluten free and vegetarian foods - which are available online.

When I was at School I felt like there was an expectation for most people to head to university after 6th year. While I often thought through my school years that one day I would like to go away and Study, when it came time that everyone was writing their personal statements, I realised this was maybe not the path for me. Although I enjoyed School I didn’t want to carry on my studies for the time being, and I also didn’t want to move away.

Just as exams were almost finished, My Dad told me he had seen a job advert for a shop assistant at “Scoop Wholefoods” and that he thought I would like it as I had always loved Food & Cooking. I told him I wasn’t sure if that was something I wanted to do, but he encouraged me that I would enjoy it and it would be fine working with a nice group of people. Taking his advice I applied for the job thinking I would never get it as I only had one previous job experience (which was Cleaning and helping out at our neighbours B & B)

I went into Scoop and collected an application form, and a few days later went for an interview with Ann, and was amazed when she phoned to offer me the job! This June will be 12 years since I started working at Scoop and I still love my job. As someone who was quite shy at School, working in a public facing job helped me grow my confidence and Scoop was a lovely environment to work in. As I had always had a keen interest in cooking I loved learning about all the ingredients in the shop and how you might use them, and would enjoy trying new things out at home. I liked being part of a small team where everyone was important, and enjoyed the variety of jobs and how every day was different.

In 2020 an opportunity came for the shop to move to bigger premises, Ann asked if I would like to become a business partner and help expand the shop in the new unit. Almost 6 years in our lovely new shop I am glad that I accepted the offer!

In 2021 Helen Dennison joined Scoop and now Ann, Helen and I all own Scoop as a Partnership. Working as a team with all our brilliant staff (past and present!)

While Higher Education is a brilliant opportunity, it is also okay if it is not for you. I feel like it would have been good to have been told this at School, and to have more advice available about your other options, such as applying for jobs and interview skills 🙂
